Affordable Housing Rare, but Some Available

Renting a newly built apartment in San Diego County for $424 a month is possible, but you literally need to win a lottery.

At the newly constructed North Santa Fe Apartments in Vista, a white letter taped to the office door Thursday informs visitors it is completely full, and the wait list is permanently closed.

Opening in July 2015, Community HousingWorks allowed 1,650 people to apply for 67 units. From there, a lottery selected about 200 potential renters and narrowed it down from there. It was 100 percent filled within two weeks of opening.
