California’s affordable housing crisis will only worsen if nothing more is done to protect the thousands of subsidized affordable rental homes at risk of market rate conversion. According to the Affordable Homes At Risk | 2025 Report released April 9 by the California Housing Partnership:
- 6,800 subsidized affordable rental homes may no longer be affordable as soon as next year due to the loss of federal, state and local protections.
- 18,056 previously affordable homes have been lost in California since 2000 through conversion to market rate housing or expiring regulatory restrictions.
- Nearly 48,000 could lose their affordability within 10 years if nothing is done.
