High cost of building affordable housing with tax dollars questioned

RJ Hill loves working at a record shop in downtown Sacramento. What he said he doesn’t necessarily love is his less than desirable commute.

“It can be up to about 45 minutes, because of the traffic,” he said.

Hill explained how he’d love to be able to walk to work and live nearby — but cost-wise, that’s not possible.

“There’s not a lot of affordable housing to go around,” Hill said. “The stuff that is around is wait-listed for months, if not years.”

Hill is not alone. More than 54,000 low-income renters in Sacramento County lack affordable housing, part of a statewide shortfall of more than 3 million units, according to a report from California Housing Partnership.
